Recommended Immunizations by Age For San Diego Residents | NCHS

August 19, 2015

Each year in August we celebrate National Immunizations Awareness Month by providing education on the importance of immunizations for children.

Should We Immunize?

Immunizations are a vital part of the overall health for children and adults, and help protect future generations. Dr. Edward Curley, a pediatric provider at our Mission Mesa Pediatrics Health Center said, “Immunizations are a state-of-the-art, safe and effective way for parents to protect their children from many illnesses, some of which can be fatal.”

Immunizations are an important step in protecting children against serious and sometimes deadly diseases. It is important that children get their immunizations when they need them.  “One of the things we are seeing, over the last couple of years, due to parents who refuse to immunize their children, is a resurgence of diseases such as polio and measles,” commented Barbara Palen, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner at San Marcos Health Center. “While we don’t want to unduly alarm folks, it is important they understand the consequences their decision may have on their own children and others.”

When Should Children Be Immunized?

The American Academy of Pediatrics—a professional organization of primary care pediatricians dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, and young adults—has recommended an immunization schedule by age that has been researched to be the most effective and safe way to protect children from disease. The immunizations are carefully timed to provide protection when children are most vulnerable, and when the immunizations will produce the strongest response from the child’s immune system. Below is the schedule of immunizations by age as recommended from the American Academy of Pediatrics and NCHS pediatric providers’.
